LED Strip Light Classification

October 13,2023

Today, the role of indoor lighting fixtures extends beyond mere illumination; they also serve a decorative purpose. If the lighting layout is well-designed, it can become the soul of decoration. For instance, led strip lights  have become an essential light source for indoor and outdoor decoration. There are various types of led strip lights, including colored, virtual, and solid lights.

So, what are the uses of these different types of strip lights, and how should we choose them for commercial or residential purposes?

1.LED strip lights are divided into high-voltage strip lights and low-voltage strip lights. High-voltage strip lights are generally used for indoor decoration and lighting. They are easy to install and can be directly powered by a high-voltage driver, connected to a 220V power source to operate normally. Low-voltage strip lights come in 5, 12, and 24V options, which are considered safe voltages and typically do not pose harm to people. They are mostly installed outdoors, for instance, in storefront illumination or mobile facility lighting and decoration. They are not only safe but also portable in

terms of power supply. However, in terms of voltage, the former is considered to be high voltage and less safe than the latter.

2.Based on the waterproof rating of strip lights, they can be categorized as non-waterproof or waterproof and dustproof. Non-waterproof strip lights are generally used indoors. Considering the frequent occurrence of rainy or humid weather outdoors, you should choose strip lights with at least an IP65 rating for outdoor use. These lights are not only waterproof but also dustproof, which enhances their lifespan.

3.Strip lights are typically classified based on their color temperature, with categories like warm white, natural white, cool white, and cold white. You can choose the appropriate category based on the desired effect and application.

4.Regarding flexibility, strip lights can be classified as rigid strip lights and flexible strip lights. Rigid strip lights use aluminum substrates for assembly, making them relatively easy to secure, process, and install. However, they cannot be easily bent and are not suitable for irregular or multi-angle locations. Flexible strip lights are assembled with PCB flexible boards and can be bent and wrapped as needed. They are suitable for irregular spaces and areas with limited space, or for creating various patterns.

5.Based on color variations, strip lights can be further divided into single-color, RGB, and multi-color strip lights. Multi-color strip lights are those where each LED on the strip is composed of red, green, and blue chips, allowing them to emit light individually or together to create white light. With a controller, they can produce four different colors sequentially and achieve dazzling effects. Seven-color strip lights, on the other hand, contain seven different colored LEDs soldered onto one strip and are considered mixed-type  LED strip lights. They are simpler than RGB strip lights but offer significantly different display effects. Choose based on your specific requirements and considerations.

Tips:

1.For safety in public places or outdoor areas, opt for low-voltage strip lights.

2.When using strip lights outdoors, make sure to select LED strip lights with at least an IP65 rating.
