Common LED Strip Certifications

August 09,2023

A product certification is a document confirming that a product meets specified safety, performance and quality standards. Product certification certificates prove that products meet international, national or industry standards through testing, auditing and reviewing processes. General certification includes product safety certification, quality certification, environmental certification, access certification, etc.

No matter in any market, product certificates have high credibility and recognition.

LED light strips have always been a hot-selling product in the lighting market. There are many suppliers in the market, and customers sometimes cannot distinguish whether the supplied products are good or bad. Therefore, led strip lights with complete certificates can undoubtedly bring more confidence to customers, and can also bring more sales channels to enterprises, improving the brand reputation and market competitiveness of enterprises.

Product certification usually has three types of characteristics: 1. The countries and regions where the certification applies. 2. Whether it is a mandatory requirement for export. 3. Certification requirements. Product certification has regional requirements, such as BIS certification for India, UL certification for the United States and so on. Some certifications are mandatory for exporting products to their countries, such as CE and Rohs certificates required by EU countries. The requirements for certification are basically testing from aspects such as safety, energy efficiency, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Next, let us introduce some common product certifications:

1.UL Certification

UL certification was founded by UL Co., Ltd., a global testing and certification organization and a standard development organization. Since its establishment in 1894, UL has published nearly 1,800 safety, quality and sustainability standards, of which more than 70% have become American National Standards, and UL is also the development agency of Canadian National Standards.

2.ETL Certification

ETL is the most dynamic safety certification mark in North America. Its history can be traced back to the electrical testing laboratory founded by Thomas Edison in 1896. It has wide popularity and recognition in North America. The ETL mark is the exclusive mark of Intertek, the world's leading quality and safety organization. Products that have obtained the ETL mark meet the mandatory standards in North America and can enter the North American market for sale.

3.FCC Certification

Established in 1934 under the Communications Act, the FCC is an independent agency of the U.S. government and is directly accountable to Congress. FCC controls radio broadcasting, television, telecommunications, satellites and cables to coordinate more than 50 states in the United States, Columbia, and areas of the United States. In order to ensure the safety of radio and resonant communication products related to life and property, the FCC's Engineering Technology Department (Office of Engineering and Technology) is responsible for the technical support of the committee, and is also responsible for the affairs of equipment approval. FCC approval is required for many radio application products, communication products and digital products to enter the US market. The FCC committee investigates and studies each stage of product safety to find out the best way to solve the problem. At the same time, the FCC also includes the detection of radio devices, aviation devices, and so on.

4.CE Certification

CE certification is limited to the basic safety requirements that the product does not endanger the safety of humans, animals and goods, rather than general quality requirements. The coordination directives only stipulate the main requirements, and the general directive requirements are standard tasks. Therefore, the precise meaning is: the CE mark is a safety mark rather than a quality mark. These are the "principal requirements" that form the core of the European Directives. The "CE" mark is a safety certification mark, which is regarded as a passport for manufacturers to open and enter the European market. In the EU market, the "CE" mark is a compulsory certification mark. Whether it is a product produced by an enterprise within the EU or a product produced in another country, if it wants to circulate freely in the EU market, the "CE" mark must be affixed to indicate that the product complies with the basic requirements of the European Union's "New Approach to Technical Coordination and Standardization" directive. This is a mandatory requirement imposed by EU law on products.

5.RoHS Certification

RoHS is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation, and its full name is "Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive on Restricting the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment". This standard has been officially implemented on July 1, 2006, and is mainly used to standardize the materials and process standards of electrical and electronic products, making it more conducive to human health and environmental protection. The purpose of this standard is to eliminate lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in electrical and electronic products.

6.CCC Certification

The full name of 3C certification is "China Compulsory Product Certification". It is a product conformity assessment system implemented by the Chinese government in accordance with laws and regulations to protect consumers' personal safety and national security, strengthen product quality management. In July 2023, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued an announcement to implement CCC certification management for lithium-ion batteries, battery packs, and mobile power sources from August 1, 2023. From August 1, 2024, those who have not obtained the CCC certification and the certification mark are not allowed to leave the factory, sell, import or use in other business activities.

7.SAA Certification

SAA certification is Australia's standard body for Standards Association of Australian certification, so many friends call it Australian certification. Electrical products entering the Australian market must comply with SAA certification. There are two main types of SAA logos, one is formal approval and the other is standard logo. Formal certification is only responsible for samples, while standard marks need to be inspected by each factory. The scope of SAA certification is mainly divided into quality management system; environmental management system; occupational health and safety management; information security management; the period for common products to apply for Australian SAA certification is 3-4 weeks. If the product quality is not up to standard, the date may be extended. If the product shipped is not certified, the product will be detained or confiscated or fined.

8.PSE Certification

PSE certification is a mandatory safety certification in Japan, which is used to prove that electrical and electronic products have passed the safety standard test of the Japanese Electrical and Material Safety Law (DENAN Law) or the international IEC standard. Japan's DENTORL Law (Electrical Device and Material Control Law) stipulates that 498 kinds of products must pass safety certification when entering the Japanese market. Among them, 165 kinds of A-type products should obtain the diamond-shaped PSE mark, and 333 kinds of B-type products should obtain the circular PSE mark.

9.BIS Certification

BIS certification is the Bureau of Indian Standards, the ISI certification and certification agency, which is specifically responsible for product certification. BIS product certification passes the initial inspection and evaluation of the factory's quality management system, sample testing, certification after confirmation, and the factory's quality management system supervision after certification. By testing the samples taken from the factory and the market, it is determined whether the product is consistent with the Indian standard. So far, Indian product certification has a history of 50 years. BIS has issued more than 30,000 product certification certificates, covering almost every industrial field such as agricultural products, textiles, and electronics.

10.EAC Certification

EAC certification is Customs Union certification, also known as Customs Union technical regulations certification or Customs Union certification, and the English abbreviation is EAC certification or CU-TR certification. EAC certification is a unified product safety certification formulated by Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other CIS countries, and it was officially implemented on February 15, 2013. The Customs Union regulations stipulate that all products under the jurisdiction of the Customs Union CU-TR technical regulations (EAC certification regulations) must apply for EAC certification. The unified certification mark is EAC marking. This kind of certification is universal in many countries.

11.CB Certification

The CB system (the IEC system for conformity testing and certification of electrical products) is an international system operated by IECEE. The certification bodies of the member states of IECEE test the safety performance of electrical products based on IEC standards. The test results are CB test reports and CB tests. The certificate is a mutually recognized system among IECEE member countries. The purpose is to reduce barriers to international trade that arise from having to meet different national certification or approval criteria.

12.Saber Certification

"Saber Certification" is a new online application system launched by SASO. Saber is actually a network tool for product registration, issuance and acquisition of COC certificates of conformity. Saber has been gradually implemented by the Saudi Technical Regulations (TR) since January 2019, and the transition was completed in February 2020. All regulated product importers must register their products in the Saber system, and obtain a certificate of compliance after passing the audit, so that the products can be successfully cleared.
